Matthew — Chapter 12 (NRSVue)

  1. At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat.
  2. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath.”
  3. He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
  4. He entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him or his companions to eat, but only for the priests.
  5. Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests in the temple break the sabbath and are innocent?
  6. I tell you, something greater than the temple is here.
  7. But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.
  8. For the Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”
  9. As he went on from that place, two blind men followed him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”
  10. When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.”
  11. Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you.”
  12. And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus sternly ordered them, “See that no one knows about this.”
  13. As they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not speak was brought to him.
  14. And when the demon had been cast out, the man who had been mute spoke; and the crowds were amazed and said, “Never has anything like this been seen in Israel.”
  15. But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he casts out demons.”
  16. Jesus went on from there and healed a man’s daughter who was sick with a fever.
  17. When the demon-possessed man who was blind and mute was brought to Jesus, he cured him, so that the man spoke and saw.
  18. All the crowds were amazed and said, “Can this be the Son of David?”
  19. But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “This man casts out demons only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.”
  20. Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.
  21. If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand?
  22. If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.
  23. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
  24. Or how can someone enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man? Then indeed the house can be plundered.
  25. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
  26. Therefore I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
  27. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
  28. Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the fruit is the outcome of the tree.
  29. Brood of vipers! How can you speak good things, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
  30. The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil.
  31. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will render account for every careless word they speak;
  32. for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
  33. Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
  34. But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet.
  35. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth.
  36. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah; and see, something greater than Jonah is here.
  37. The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and see, something greater than Solomon is here.
  38. When Jesus went away from there, the scribes and Pharisees began to plot how to destroy him.
  39. But Jesus knew their thoughts and said, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.
  40. If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand?
  41. If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.
  42. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”
  43. Then someone told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
  44. But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”
  45. And pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!
  46. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
